The 8-bit photo journal is an on-going collaborative photography project, started in 2026. I am in charge of putting the submissions together with my wife... submissions by 30+ photographers from around the world. There are currently two published volume. Starting from vol02 there will have a different theme for each upcoming ones.
Where can I see the past volume?
By clicking the icons above, you will be navigated to their itch.io page where you can experience the photobook in on your web browser. From there you will find the context and full credits of the artists participated.
Can I see the 8-bit photo journal on my Gameboy?
Absolutely! This would require a hardware, a GB cartigde - these items can be acquired online easily. Contact me for more info.
How do I convert my pictures to 8-bit?
Use pictogb.com to convert simple b&w photos. For colour photos, use the photo converter I made HERE (itch.io) - desktop recommended.
For a B&W volume, there will be different colour pallete to choose from (gb classic, b&w, cyanotype, serpia). If you dont specify it will default to the B/W palette. May be varied by the theme.
What are the image requirements?
The recommended ratio is 10:9. The finished book is designed so it can run nativley on the Gameboy handheld, the screen size of which is the deciding factor for the image size.
Do I have to submit my photos already in 8bits?
No, you can submit a normal photo and it will be converted for you but its encouraged to submit in 8bits since you will have control over how it gets converted.
Is there any rules?
You can only submit photos you have taken yourself. /No ai generated images. / Respect others, no discriminations.
Do I have to include all the image information (image title/place and date taken/etc)
You are encouraged to but the only information you have to include is the name you want displayed as your name. If you don’t include an image title it will be called “untitled”.
Do I own my image copyrights?
All Images in the publication are the copyright of the original photographers. By submitting your image, you agreed to have them used for showcasing when the volume is published.
Are there any fees?
No this is free to submit images to and the images submitted will remain the the copyright of the submitting artists nor will the final journal be sold or monetized, this is a passion project meant to freely share 8-bit images with the public.
